Hi, I'm Keith

I kept noticing that chess made my brain feel different. So I started writing things down.

This is where I keep track of everything I'm learning - chess experiments, music I'm composing, a comic I'm drawing, and lessons I teach. It all started with one question about chess and math.

What I'm Thinking About

Does playing chess before math actually help?

Sometimes my brain feels noisy when I try to do math. But when I play chess first, something changes. So I started measuring it - time, accuracy, and focus across six trials.

I found out my hypothesis was partly right and partly wrong. That's the interesting part.

What I'm Building

The Pawn's Journey - a chess comic

I'm making a comic about a pawn who has to cross the whole board. It's about chess but also about choices, teamwork, and what happens when a small piece does something big.

The cool part is that the comic combines four things I love: chess, writing, drawing, and storytelling. Most chess websites don't have any of that.

Pages are still in progress. Check back soon.

What I'm Learning

Every tournament teaches me something

I keep scorebooks, take notes, and try to figure out what I did right and wrong. Even losing teaches me things.

What I'm Teaching

I like teaching other kids chess

I run classroom sessions and help with Chess4Smiles, which raises money to buy chess sets for kids in hospitals. Teaching someone else a tactic is one of the best ways to make sure I really understand it.

What I'm Creating

I also make music, draw, and write books

I composed the music for this website. I also wrote and illustrated a book called An Unexpected Trip to Rote when I was 7. And I draw digital art. Chess is my main thing, but it connects to everything else I do.

Theme music I composed for StormChess.

Things I've been thinking about

"I think chess helps me notice patterns faster."
"Sometimes losing teaches me more than winning."
"I like knights because they don't move the way people expect."
"When I play chess before math, I feel more awake."

This is easier to show than explain. Here's a short video where I talk about why I built this.
